In our house, we love pumpkin carving! There are some awesome and mind blowing designs we have seen in our neighbourhood on pumpkins. The kids love to carve pumpkins. Roman, however does not like slimy things on his hands, so he takes a bit of coaxing to get involved. He would prefer to watch.

Halloween snacks

Pumpkin fondue:

Ingredients:

6 tbsp cornflour
600ml white wine
3 crushed garlic cloves
400ml (14 fl oz) double cream
600g (1lb 5oz) grated gruyere
600g (1lb 5oz) mature cheddar
1 large scooped out pumpkin

Directions:

Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan) mark 4. Place the pumpkin in the oven for 30min to heat through.
In a large pan, mix cornflour, white wine and garlic, followed by the double cream and both cheeses. Stir over a medium heat until cheese has melted.
Pour fondue into the pumpkin, season with pepper and serve with crusty bread and gherkins to dip.

Eerie eyeball pops

These are great fun to create with the kids!

Ingredients:

100g/4oz madeira cake
100g Oreo cookie
100g bar milk chocolate, melted
200g bar white chocolate, melted
few Smarties and icing pens, to decorate

You also need:

10 wooden skewers
½ small pumpkin or butternut squash , deseeded, to stand pops in

Instructions:

Break the Madeira cake and cookies into the bowl of a food processor, pour in the melted milk chocolate and whizz to combine.
Tip the mixture into a bowl, then use your hands to roll into about 10 walnut-sized balls. Chill for 2 hrs until really firm.
Push a skewer into each ball, then carefully spoon the white chocolate over the cake balls to completely cover. Stand the cake pops in the pumpkin, then press a Smartie onto the surface while wet. Chill again until the chocolate has set. Before serving, using the icing pens, add a pupil to each Smartie and wiggly red veins to the eyeballs.

Halloween slash cake

Ingredients:

140g unsalted butter , plus extra for the tin
100ml grapeseed oil , or another flavourless oil
200ml milk
3 tbsp yogurt
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 large eggs , at room temperature
250g light muscovado sugar
250g plain flour
3 tsp baking powder
50g cocoa powder
¾ x 340g jar strawberry jam
1¼ kg ready-to-roll white fondant icing

Butter cream:

600g icing sugar , sifted, plus extra for dusting
300g butter , softened
red food colouring

Directions:

Heat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Butter and line the bases of two 20cm sandwich tins. Melt the butter in a pan, then remove from the heat and beat in the oil, milk, yogurt, vanilla and eggs. Whisk the dry ingredients together with a large pinch of salt, squishing any lumps of sugar with your fingers. Tip the wet ingredients into the dry, then whisk until smooth.
Divide the batter between the tins and bake for 25-30 mins on the same shelf of the oven until risen and a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Leave to cool for 10 mins in the tins, then transfer to a rack to cool completely.
To make the buttercream, beat together the sugar, butter and a few drops of the red food colouring. Add 2-3 tbsp of boiling water if needed to soften the mixture, until you end up with a smooth, spreadable icing.
Trim the cakes flat if needed, then halve each through the middle using a large serrated knife. Put one cake layer on a board or plate, spread over a thin layer of the buttercream and dot over a third of the jam. Top with another cake layer and repeat with the buttercream, jam and cake, finishing with a layer of cake. Use most of the remaining buttercream to ice the cake all over, reserving a small amount.
Roll the fondant icing out on a surface dusted with icing sugar until large enough to cover the top and sides of the cake. Carefully lift it up onto the cake and smooth down to help it to stick. Use a sharp knife to cut slashes into the icing, then drizzle a little of the reserved buttercream mixed with some water into each to look like blood.

Spider biscuits

Ingredients:

70g butter, softened
50g peanut butter
150g golden caster sugar
1 medium egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
180g plain flour
½ tsp bicarbonate of soda
20 peanut butter cups, Rolo’s or Maltesers
100g milk chocolate, chopped
icing eyes, or make your own

Directions:

Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and line two baking sheets with parchment. Using an electric hand whisk, cream the butter, peanut butter and sugar together until very light and fluffy, then beat in the egg and vanilla. Once combined, stir in the flour, bicarb and ¼ tsp salt.
Scoop 18-20 tbsps of the mixture onto the trays, leaving enough space between each to allow for spreading. Make a thumbprint in the centre of the cookies. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until firm at the edges but still soft in the middle – they’ll harden a little as they cool. Leave to cool on the tray for a few minutes before topping each biscuit with a peanut butter cup, Rolo or Malteser. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Heat the chocolate in the microwave in short bursts, or in a bowl set over a pan of simmering water, until just liquid. Scrape into a piping bag and leave to cool a little. Pipe the legs onto each spider, then stick two eyes on each. Leave to set. Will keep for three days in an airtight container.

Halloween mocktail punch:

Ingredients:

425g can lychees
225g jar cocktail cherries
15 raisins
1 litre carton blueberry, blackberry or purple grape juice , chilled
1 litre carton cherry or cranberry juice , chilled
1litre sparkling water , chilled

You’ll also need:

2 pairs powder-free disposable gloves

Directions:

Rinse the disposable gloves and fill each with water. Tie a knot in the top of each as you would a balloon, or use a tight bag clip to hold the opening closed. Freeze overnight.
Drain the lychees and cocktail cherries, reserving the juices in a jug. Push a raisin into one end of each cherry, then push the cherries into the lychees to make ‘eyeballs’.
Tip all of the juices, plus the reserved lychee and cherry juices, into a large bowl with the ‘eyeballs’. Carefully peel the gloves from the ice hands, add to the punch, then top up with the sparkling water.

Candy apples:

Ingredients:

8 red apples
400g caster sugar
1 tsp lemon juice
4 tbsp golden syrup
a few drops red food colouring (optional)

You also need:

8 sticks , chopsticks or lolly sticks

Directions:

Remove the stalks from the apples, then put them in a heatproof bowl and pour over boiling water from the kettle to cover them and leave for 3-4 mins. Remove with a slotted spoon and pat dry. (This removes the protective wax from the skin and makes the toffee stick to the apples better.)
Push the sharpest end of each stick into the stalk-end of each apple, making sure it’s firmly wedged in. Put a large piece of baking parchment on a board.
Tip the sugar into a large saucepan, add the lemon juice and 100ml water. Bring to a simmer and cook until the sugar has dissolved. Swirl the pan gently to move the sugar around, but don’t stir. Add the golden syrup and simmer the mixture (be careful it doesn’t boil over) until it reaches ‘hard crack’ stage or 150C on a sugar thermometer. If you don’t have a thermometer, test the toffee by dropping a small amount into cold water. It should harden instantly and, when removed, be brittle. If it’s soft, continue to boil. When it’s ready, drip in some food colouring, if you like, and swirl to combine. Turn off the heat.
Working quickly, dip each apple into the toffee, tipping the pan to cover it fully. Lift out and allow any excess to drip off back into the pan before placing on the baking parchment. Repeat with the remaining apples. Gently heat the toffee again, if you need to. Leave to set. Best eaten on the same day.

Edible fake blood:

Ingredients:

1 tbsp cornflour
45ml cherry juice or water
250g glucose syrup
red, blue and yellow food colouring gel

Directions:

Mix the cornflour with 1 tbsp cherry juice, then tip the mixture into a small pan with the glucose syrup and remaining cherry juice. Heat gently over a low heat, whisking well to combine, then remove from the heat.
Squeeze in a generous amount of the red food colouring gel and stir well, then add a very small drop each of the blue and yellow food colouring gels and stir again. You are aiming for a deep red-brown blood colour. Continue adding little drops of food colouring, stirring well between each addition, until you reach your desired colour. The edible fake blood will keep in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to three weeks. This recipe makes a thick, slow-running gel. If you want a thinner gel, simply stir in a little more cherry juice or water.

Pastry snakes:

Ingredients:

320g pack ready-rolled puff pastry
50g grated parmesan or vegetarian alternative
Flour , for dusting
1 egg , beaten
Poppy seeds , nigella seeds, sesame seeds or celery seeds, to decorate
Black or green peppercorns

Directions:

Heat the oven to 220C/200C fan/ gas 7. Unroll the pastry and top with a couple of handfuls of parmesan, then fold in half. On a lightly floured surface, roll the pastry out to a thickness of 2mm. Cut into 1cm strips, then twist each strip several times to form a snake.
Lay out the snakes on a baking sheet, then brush each one with egg and sprinkle with more cheese. To decorate, scatter over the seeds. Flatten one end of each snake and press in two peppercorns for eyes. Bake for 12-14 mins, or until golden. Leave to cool. Will keep for two days in an airtight container.

Halloween biscuits:

Halloween ghost biscuits-Ingram freedom journey

Ingredients:

200g unsalted butter , softened
200g golden caster sugar
1 large egg
½ tsp vanilla extract
400g plain flour , plus extra for dusting
20g popping candy (or rainbow sprinkles for very young children)

For decorations:

White, black and grey sugar paste
100g icing sugar

Directions:

Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6 and line a baking sheet with baking parchment.
Put the butter in a bowl and beat with electric beaters until soft and creamy. Beat in the sugar, then the egg and vanilla, and finally the flour to make a dough. If the dough feels a bit sticky add a little more flour and knead it in. Wrap in cling film and put in the fridge for half an hour.
Heavily flour a surface and cut the pastry in half. Roll out one half to 5mm thickness. Using a cookie cutter in the shape of a ghost (or any spooky shaped cutter you like), cut out 12 ghost shapes, which will make 4 cookies. Put the cut shapes on a baking tray lined with baking paper and put back in the fridge. Repeat with the second half of the pastry. Swap into the fridge, taking the chilled ghost biscuits out.
Using a smaller cutter or a knife, cut a ghost-shaped hole in the middle of 4 of the biscuits on the tray, this is the space to store the surprise centre! Put these biscuits into the oven to bake for 10-12 mins, until pale but cooked through. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Repeat with the other tray.

When cooled:

Once all the biscuits have cooled completely, they are ready to be assembled. Mix the icing sugar with 3 tbsp of water and mix well. It should be quite thick so add a little more icing sugar if the mixture is too runny. Take a biscuit without the centre missing, and spread or pipe a little icing around the edge. Press a biscuit with a centre missing on top, then sprinkle popping candy into the pocket that you have created (or rainbow sprinkles as an alternative, if you’re serving to very young children). Spread icing on the edge of the second biscuit and press another whole biscuit on top. Set aside to firm up. Make sure you leave them for a while so they don’t slide when you are finishing the decoration.
Once the biscuits feel firm and the icing has set, use the sugar paste to decorate them as you please, rolling it out, cutting it to shape and topping the biscuits. You may have to use a little of the icing to glue it down. Decorate with icing pens if you like.

Last year trick or treating just didn’t happen, hopefully we will be good to go this year. If it turns out otherwise then not to worry! We have some great ideas for you.

Scavenger Hunt

Scavenger hunts are always good fun and you can play these across every holidays season.

So for your scavenger hunt, all you need is packets of sweets, you could buy the jumbo bags of Haribo, that has the smaller packets.

Then you can get your creative juices running. Get crafty, to create your spooky stickers to put on your sweet packets. All you will need is some sheets of paper, felt pens or paint, scissors and some cellotape. Draw whatever design you would like around 3 inches big, colour and then cut them out so you can stick them onto each sweet packet. If you didn’t want to draw them yourselves, then you can create a design on Canva or word, print them out, cut and stick onto each sweet packet.

One you have designed all your ‘stickers’ and stuck them onto your sweet packets, all that is left to do is to hide the sweets and start your scavenger hunt! For free Halloween activities click here.

Guess the word

All you need for this game is a pen and post it pad.

Each person has to write down their creepy words. Then, one person picks a word from the pile (without looking!) and tries to guess what it is, based on the clues the player is giving. The one who guesses the most correctly wins.

Make your own slime

Green gooey slime ready for Halloween! Who doesn’t love slime?

Ingredients:

50z clear glue

1 Tbsp baking soda

Green glitter paint

3 Tbsp lens solution

Squeeze all of the glue into the bowl. Add 1 Tbsp of baking soda and then the glitter paint. Starting with a small amount until you reach your desired colour. Stir until combined, then mix in 3 Tbsp of lens solution. Roll the slime in your hands until it no longer sticks— this can take around 5 full minutes. HINT: If it is still too sticky, add saline solution. And viola! You have slime.
